2017 ELT Defect and Replacement

Posted by on September 4, 2017

The Ameri-King AK-450 ELT that I originally installed back in 2016 had some serious issues. The original post when I fabricated the tray and installed the ELT can be found here:

Hangar Completion #9 (ELT Installation)

In the above post, I had completed the installation of the ELT when the aircraft was in my basement, and left the ELT out of the airframe until I had completed the move to the Hangar later that year. Shortly thereafter, I found that the ELT had a defect (the plastic tip to the “Test” button had fallen out of the front panel of the ELT.) I contacted the manufacturer and sent the unit back for warranty repair.  What ensued thereafter was some of the worst customer support I’ve ever experienced, with the only person I could reach by phone arguing with me that I had to pay them $159 to have the unit refurbished and sent back because he didn’t believe that I hadn’t abused the unit, which showed no other signs of damage. (I didn’t abuse it.)  As time passed and more unfruitful phone calls were made to get my unit back, this FAA directive was released for “noncompliance to quality standards and manufacturer processes” for this very unit by this very manufacturer:

At this point I gave up on ever getting my ELT back, and moved on with finding a replacement.

The FAA later later released an AD for this line of products:

I then purchased an Artex 345 406MHZ ELT.  I was able to install this ELT using the tray I had built with a few modifications to the hole pattern. It also required replacement of my old antenna with the new 406MHZ antenna in the same location, and replacement of the remote cockpit switch also in the same location on the turtledeck bulkhead.  I didn’t happen to snap a photo specifically of the new installation, but you can see everything in the following photo.

The green ELT is behind the 2nd turtledeck bulkhead. You can see the 406MHZ antenna just aft on the top of the turtledeck (it has a black rubber base). And on Turtledeck former #1, just below the headset jacks, is the hole where the remote switch is installed.

In the end I have a superior ELT (at twice the cost and no refund on the first) and am glad I was able to fit the new unit using the same platform as the original.
