About

Welcome to my blog! My name is Ryan Roth and I am a corporate pilot living in Knoxville, TN. In the summer of 2013 I came across a brochure for sonexaircraft.com. It piqued my interest and the more I researched their airframe hardware kits, the more interested I became in actually building one. The kicker came when I realized that I could realistically build the entire airplane in my unfinished basement, remove the wings, and fit it out an existing door opening (the door itself will need to be replaced.)

By October 2013 I was very close to making a decision on whether or not to purchase a kit, and attended a Sonex Workshop in Oshkosh, WI.

I had the opportunity to take a test flight in the Sonex pictured below.

During the workshop, we made a sample part of the airframe: a section of the leading edge of the wing:

By the end of the workshop, I was sold. I ordered my kit and awaited delivery of Waiex #197.

    Ryan,,

Do you have tools still for sale? I esp. need a Sonex bucking bar & black clecoes. I’m making my Xenos wing spar now.

    • Ryan

Rick, I decided to keep them for the time being, they have come in handy in later stages in the project and am going to keep them around until the airframe is complete.

What has happened to this project? I have been following along for years and it has been a while….. certified, or mothballed?

    • Ryan

Neither! I’m back at it and working toward completion. I appreciate you checking in!

    Ryan,

I am glad to see that you have made it off the ground. I have been following your blog for several years and even came over to your house a few years ago to check out your build. Thank you for that. Now, I have a question. Would you be interested in doing a short presentation on you build, first flight and blog at the EAA Chapter 17 October meeting on the 7th? We currently meet at the 510 building at TYS and could show some of your videos, photos and some of your blog to the group if you were interested. Nothing too formal just an overview of your build with a question and answer session at the end.

I am keen to learn more about your dual plug heads. How was the 2nd plug installed?
